New Year Resolutions

New year, fresh start!

No, resolutions aren’t obligatory. Some of us may feel our life at the moment is a blur and we don’t notice the changing of the year. Some of us don’t use the Gregorian calendar. No matter. Just to say 2010 is on us and let’s seize the day and make this event of marking time an opportunity to refresh ourselves.

Most of us are not like Mary Poppins who confesses that she’s practically perfect in every way. We can probably see ways in which we’re not perfect, or find that discipline is useful to maintain what perfection we’ve achieved for ourselves. This is where the New Year Resolution comes in.

Would it be useful to start something new, or restore something that we started earlier? What discipline, encouragement or enforcement do we need to maintain a resolution? Can we do it all by ourselves or do we need someone else? What does past experience tell us of our previous resolutions or projects commenced?

Supposing we’re up for the challenge, where do we need to start? Often we need to look at ourselves before we’re ready to help others. Some may have done that already and are ready to give themselves to a cause. If we need to sort ourselves out, where are our priorities? The body? The mind? The emotions? Would we want to help out others who are like ourselves, HIV positive, or would we benefit from reaching out to people who are completely different?

So many questions! Is this to be undertaken as an intellectual exercise or are we wasting time and getting impatient to start something? Oops, another question.

If you’re ready, have a look at the table below. If you’re a ‘people person’ and not interested in paperwork, look away now.

Key outcome that I am aiming for

How I am going to achieve this

When I aim to have achieved this

Who I am going to work with on it

How I will know when this outcome has been reached

Is your mind resolved? Is your head revolving? Is your heart revolting? Are your spirits revived? Is your interest in this article revoked?

Let me know (martin.toal@bpnw.org.uk) if you have a story to tell about any of your resolutions, past, present and projected. It may be something to shout about!

Have a happy, healthy and constructive New Year 2010!

Bonne année, Feliz Ano Novo, Frohes neues Jahr, С Новым годом, Feliz año Nuevo, Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!
