Hate Crime and Disabled People
An additional support service for disabled people in Greater Manchester has been established by Breakthrough UK.
Hate crime which can take the shape of verbal attacks or physical assaults is a criminal offence motivated by hatred or prejudice towards a person because of their disability.
This new service aims to support disabled people with advocacy and help access professional advice to overcome the effects of an attack, while also monitoring when and where they occur. We are looking for disabled volunteers to become peer advocates in return they will receive training.
This work is funded by the Equality and Human Rights Commission to support people who have been the victims of hate crime

Breakthrough UK, formed in 1997 in partnership with Manchester City Council and local disabled people’s organisations, champions independent living and aims to empower and support disabled people to make their own choices, to access mainstream jobs and to achieve their full potential. It has good links with BPNW.
